You might have forgiven for thinking Selena Gomez and David Henrie are dating despite once playing on-screen siblings on Wizards of Waverly Place. But there are times you need to overlook the reports that assumed they were on a date when they were just catching up.
The pair has been really close since those Disney days. And despite Henrie being hitched to wife Maria Cahill since 2017, but there seems to be a general wonderment about the nature of their relationship even after all these years.
There were several reports that they were on a date, but they have not said anything about it. Still, a source has come forward to say they'd catch up time and again after the years with Wizards of Waverly Place, but not for dating or stuff. To settle, they are still more like siblings as they remain really good friends still.
There has been a certain claim that Selena Gomez and David Henrie did date in mid-2007, just before the first season of Wizards of Waverly Place came to Disney, but only for a few weeks.

It does seem a little unnatural to be going out for a few weeks, but it might have also given them closure on what they could be together. And looking at the future, the two might have decided on being best friends to be a good thing for them. They were only teenagers back then, but who knows? Maturity can strike people a little early.
It's understandable that people thought they were dating. Of course, they were often seen walking hand-in-hand, going to dinners/lunches together and vacationing together. Like that time they left the Philippe Chow restaurant together in 2010, or when they spent some quality time together at a friend's house in 2013.
They seem to have reunited at least once a year.

They've reunited a bunch of times after the show ended in 2012. But on many occasions, it would be when she was taking a break from the relationship with Justin Bieber. The 2013 meeting was something like that. And in 2018, Bieber was finally confirming his thing with Hailey Baldwin, the two friends vacationed in Italy for sort of a getaway.

So yeah, sure, they are close, but Henrie seems like a big brother she could always go to when she needs comfort from a bad breakup.
The rumors were heavily sparked in 2013 as someone photographed Selena allegedly heading to a friend's house and spending quality time with David. It's not the first (and certainly not the last) time that they were seen hanging out often, but 2013 was a difficult time for her during her off time with Justin. (David's character in the Disney show is named 'Justin' too, by the way.)

However, the speculations were all but shut down when a source told Hollywood Life, "They are not dating. They are just friends, currently. They spent a good portion of their life together and are great friends and they don’t want to or have not even thought about ruining it with dating."
Of course, they've held the friendship together all these years later too. "Strictly platonic, she is more prone to be the matchmaker for him than the match," the source concluded.

It's unclear if David met Maria through Selena at all, but there's no doubt the three have so much respect for each other.
David Henrie got married to his wife, Maria Cahill, in April 2017, and the guest list did include all his Wizards of Waverly Place co-stars, the whole Russo family, also including 'Harper Finkle' actor, Jennifer Stone. Selena also got on social media to proclaim her feelings for her "big brother getting married."
Bet you didn't expect their little brother, 'Max', there.

"Very much in my feelings about my big brother getting married," she wrote on Instagram. "Even though we for sure knew it would be him first. May God bless you and your beautiful wife Henrie! 💕"
Over a year later, she was seen with David photographing with fan on a reunion trip to Italy. Some months before that, Selena, as her character 'Alex Russo', was crashing his date night with Maria. And by the way, his on-screen mother is played by another Maria, Maria Canals-Barrera.

"Alex always crashing the party ;)," the How I Met Your Mother star wrote under the photo above. She's been the perfect third wheel for him.
It seems there's a little part of their life as on-screen siblings here and there. And like any siblings that go on their separate path, they do catch up at times. We wouldn't mind if there was a reunion special of Wizards of Waverly Place with the same scenario as in real life.
