Julie Cypher has been married twice, once to first husband Lou Diamond Phillips and currently to Matthew Hale. But she's best known as the partner of musician Melissa Etheridge for a decade in between.
It's been a devastating week for Melissa Etheridge and her former partner Julie Cypher. The two used to be partners back when there was a huge revolution with the LGBTQ community as they were one of the first openly lesbian couples to come out.
The pair's second child together, Beckett Cypher, passed away a few days ago, succumbing to opioid addiction. He'd been struggling with it for quite a while now.
Cypher and Etheridge were together for a decade in the late 20th century since meeting in 1988 to 2000. The split would've been all well and good, but the reason was not as expected. Cypher actually came out straight during a therapy session, and turns out, she was married to a man before meeting Etheridge and after splitting from her as well.
Back in the day, the legendary Lou Diamond Phillips was at the start of his career when he first met Cypher. There's not much detail into their relationships, but they married in 1986. Two years into their marriage, Cypher was working on a project with Melissa Etheridge, the first time they met.

Cypher was kind of in the internship period of her short-lived directorial career in the late '80s, 1988, to be exact. She was working with Etheridge on her Grammy-nominated single, Bring Me Some Water that year. Two more years later, in 1990, she divorced Phillips in order to pursue a relationship with Etheridge. But it was only public when Etheridge decided to come out in January 1993.
They spent a decade together as they became strong advocates for gay rights when it was a burning issue in its infancy. They also appeared on the cover of PETA's poster campaign for We'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur in 1995, a little after her directorial movie Teresa's Tattoo was released.
Over the course of a decade of their relationship, Cypher gave birth to two children, a daughter Bailey Jean in February 1997 and a son Beckett in November 1998. They were born through artificial insemination. It was revealed just before the split that the donor was another musician David Crosby in January 2000.

When discussing the last name of the babies, they mentioned in an interview in November 1996 that they were thinking of a common name that they'd use in the papers while using their own names in the media. At the time, there was a huge talk of Brad Pitt rumored to be the father of their first child.
There were a lot of things happening back in the day as Cypher's infidelity came to question, the rumors of the affair with K.D. Lang and even Bill Clinton checking in on Cypher in 1992. Cypher wrote a memoir The Truth Is ... My Life in Love and Music in the early 2000s revealing all her relationship trouble in the past.

In the memoir, she states that in the last year of their relationship in 1999, she tried to be attracted to Etheridge and girls, in general, but she wasn't able to. "She said, 'You know, I've tried and I've tried these last couple of years, and I'm just not gay'," she wrote. "Ten years and two children later seemed like a bizarre time to make that discovery."

For Etheridge, though, she admitted of cheating during her past relationships but that she's never done it when with Cypher. Anyway, the two tried to make it work until September 2000, as they announced their split.
After the split from Cypher, Melissa Etheridge went on to have a relationship with the Popular actress Tammy Lynn Michaels. They were engaged in April 2003 and married later that year with a commitment ceremony in September 2003.
The split with Tammy was not a happy one, initially.

Etheridge and Michaels, who changed her last name to match Etheridge's during their marriage, gave birth to twins in October 2006, a son and a daughter. But towards 2010, there was trouble in paradise for the two with claims at both sides of the marriage.
They filed for a "divorce", written with quotation marks in the papers, as they announced their separation in April 2010. But the custody and monetary battle raged on until it was settled in May 2012.

However, Etheridge again found love as she married her second wife Linda Wallem on May 31, 2014, in San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California. They both turned 53 just two days before the wedding.
Meanwhile, Julie Cypher became committed to one person after the controversial breakup. She married husband Matthew Hale in 2004 and stayed out of the limelight for pretty much the entire time, even after 16 years into their marriage.
